The project
At 3,500 kWp, Jubilee Mall is the largest single-site installation Sunbird Solar has delivered to date — and it was built to lead, not just to comply. The system feeds directly into the bulk 11kV network via 800V inverters stepped up through a Sungrow MV station, making this one of the first projects in South Africa to deploy the Sungrow MV station and 350 kW inverter combination at commercial scale.
We didn't just install solar — we rearchitected the site's entire electrical infrastructure. The existing 3-way RMU was replaced with a new 5-way unit, creating a dedicated solar connection point and leaving a clear pathway for future BESS integration. Combined with the 1,385 kWp system we took under management on the same site, Sunbird now oversees a total of 4,885 kWp at Jubilee Mall.
Phase 2: battery storage
When we re-engineered Jubilee Mall's electrical infrastructure, we left a clear pathway for battery storage. That pathway is now in use. The mall is home to a Huawei LUNA2000-5015 battery energy storage system: a 5,015 kWh grid-forming system launched in 2025. At commissioning, it was the first of its kind in South Africa and the first with off-grid capability on the African continent.
Our scope went well beyond a standard EPC. Sunbird also designed and delivered the civil works, giving the client a single point of accountability from foundations to commissioning.
